How to Knit a Cardigan
A free, video tutorial for beginners
The free How to Knit a Cardigan class is a full tutorial perfect for beginners. This class covers everything from choosing your size to blocking your finished cardigan, and everything in between. You do not need to have previous sweater knitting experience. You just need to know the very basics of knitting.
This class uses the Jane cardigan pattern. For best results, I recommend you follow along using Jane. You can buy it on my website here and on Ravelry here. You can use the discount code FIRSTCARDIGAN for 20% off.
Purchase your copy and print it out so you can easily circle the numbers for your size.
As soon as you have your pattern handy, hit “play” on the video below. The class begins by walking you through the first page of the pattern and helping you choose your size and figure out how much yarn you need to buy.
If you need some help yarn shopping, listed below are some yarn recommendations to get you started.
Yarn:
Jane uses DK weight yarn. This is a common yarn weight that can be easily found in your local yarn store. You can also use the ever-popular combination of a strand of fingering weight merino held together with a strand of lace weight mohair.
I recommend using a non-superwash wool yarn (here is why), but you can use superwash wool or even acrylic if you want to. I don’t do yarn snobbery over here!
Some yarns that I recommend are:
North Bay Fiber Co Heritage DK (I used this one for the kid's sample)
Brown Sheep Prairie Spun DK
Juniper Moon Farm Patagonia Organic Merino
Kelbourne Woolens Scout (this one is very soft)
Cascade Eco Merino DK
Sonder Yarn Co Sunday Morning DK
Bare Naked Wools Better Breakfast DK (this one wears really well)
Harrisville Designs Nightshades and Daylights
Amersand Fibers Jenson DK
Knit Picks Capra DK
The Fibre Company Lore
